Search Britannica The roots of the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention, the first women's rights convention in history, go back to 1840, when Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were attending the World's Anti-Slavery Convention in London as delegates, as were their husbands. One of the male participants to give their support for women’s suffrage was national abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass, the only African-American to attend the Seneca Falls Convention.
However, the idea for the convention came about at another protest meeting: the 1840 World Anti-Slavery Convention held in London. The 1848 Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention occurred in an atmosphere of idealistic reform.

On July 16, Lucretia Mott sent a note to Stanton apologizing in advance for James Mott not being able to attend the first day, as he was feeling "quite unwell".On July 19, 1848, the morning of the first day of convention, the organizing committee arrived at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel shortly before ten o'clock on a hot, sunny day to find a crowd gathered outside and the church doors locked—an overlooked detail.In the evening, the meeting was opened to all persons, and Lucretia Mott addressed a large audience.A larger crowd attended on the second day, including more men.
As a result, they joined forces in organizing a convention to finally call for action and equality.The final product, the Seneca Falls Convention, took place over a two-day period, with almost 300 attendees. Some of the women thought that it would create public outrage and undermine their other political efforts, while other participants thought it was core to achieving equality.
