Comes across as D&D fan fiction. Apparently this is part of a massive series, but the book cover says #1 so I thought I was reading the first book.
As seems to be the standard for a new Midkemia series, you develop a good feel for where this one is going, but it takes forever to get any speed going. I spent most of the first two chapters wondering fi this was going to be an entirely new set of characters, then we started encountering the sons and grandsons of earlier characters.
some of the characters had potential but most of them were forgettable...as were most of their names (which I could not remember since they had to be at least 4 syllables) and there was far too much written about cities, countries and other worlds and their political crap that didn't really do anything to add to this story except extend it out hundreds of more pages than it should have been. Which is fine, but for some reason that sort of thing bothers me more than it used to; one story broken in half to save on printing costs and for marketing purposes.Despite having quite a few books left to read, it feels like the series is ramping up to an epic conclusion. I honestly felt the star elves were under used, but the balance between loro and gula with amirantha and sandreena worked well.
I like D&D, so that's not an inherently bad thing, but it's usually not an indicator of quality, either. The story was clearly a two parter from the go, but wasn't slow and if anything could have been better with more context. I expected it to be thicker than it was but was really just happy at having another book to read on the adventures of Pug. It isn't one long series - they are several series and a few standalone books but they all share a common thread and some common characters. I however held out to the end and still was disappointed.
The onslaught to come will dwarf every dire catastrophe his imperiled world has previously withstood, and there is no magical champion in all of Midkemia powerful enough to prevent it. On Sale: 09/14/2010 The Chaoswar Saga: A Kingdom Besieged, A Crown Imperilled, Magician’s End character's story in each chapter" because if you are really enjoying one character (the female knight's was good) its aggravating to have to read about others that aren't as good.

I liked the next ones, but somewhere along the road it just got all meh and here, I can even bother anymoreBusiness as usual in the author's fantasy world, with armies of demons doing their own thing and threatening to wreak havoc, causing a series of reactions and conflicts that lead us to another unknown branch of this great story. Narrated by: John Meagher. Book One of the Demonwar Saga. [return][retI've read Ray Feist from Magican right on through Rides A Dread Legion and I do not believe he has lost a beat.
