A splashy $1 billion-plus development in Rowlett that features a 6.5-acre Crystal Lagoon, sandy beach, resort hotel and show fountain gained the city’s blessing Thursday night.
The first phase includes the crystal lagoon with a synchronized water and video show. But Bayside’s plans sank, and the project never took off.“We look forward to building all of the quality amenities that will include a resort hotel, convention center, surf park and public trail along the beautiful shores of Lake Ray Hubbard,” Marc S. English, the project’s co-developer and president of Sapphire Bay Land Development, said in a statement. As part of the agreement, the City would drop its lawsuit against the original developers who said building the Lagoon and fountain were no longer feasible. The city would then sell that to the new developer, who isn’t being identified just yet.This area, south of I-30 will no longer be considered part of the Bayside project and would be renamed. City Manager Brian Funderburk says some minor details of Monday’s vote will be announced Tuesday.He believes the July 31 deadline will give all sides plenty of time to work all of this out.
