Only a relatively few mounted squadrons carried out reconnaissance missions at divisional level. At the insistence of the Minister of War General Hampered by the geography and difficult terrain of the Gran Chaco, combined with scarce water sources and inadequate logistical preparations, the Bolivian superiority in vehicles (water-cooled), tanks, and towed artillery in the end did not prove decisive. The Bolivians retaliated with an air strike on Bahía Negra on 15 December, which caused few casualties and not much damage. The ultimate peace treaties granted two-thirds of the disputed territories to Paraguay. The Argentine military attaché in Asuncion, Col. Schweizer, continued to advise the Paraguayan command well after the start of hostilities. It started when Bolivia attempted to overrun Paraguayan positions in Gran Chaco, and ended in an overwhelming Paraguayan victory and Bolivia seeing its republic dissolve into a dictatorship, as nearby countries mediated a peace settlement. Both racially and culturally, the Paraguayan army was practically homogeneous. In January 1933 the Bolivian First Corps began its attack on Fortín Nanawa. The Junín regiment suffered the same fate, but the Chacaltaya regiment was able to escape encirclement due to intervention of two other Bolivian regiments. Seven thousand Bolivian troops had to evacuate Fortín Alihuatá. Standard's English-language newsletter, “The Lamp,” printed an article on the Chaco War in its August 1934 edition, which stated there was no oil or indication of oil in the Chaco, and that it sold oil more or less equally to the combatants. A number of volunteers and hired personnel from different countries participated in the war on both sides.
