Considered part of the second generation of the Bay Area Figurative movement, influential artist Joan Brown obsessively painted everyday imagery from her own life: domestic scenes, swimming excursions in the San Francisco bay, or outings to the opera with her husband. From as far back as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for any activity that allowed me to create or bring something new into existence. After attending the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute), Joan Brown found early success working in the style of her mentor, the Bay Area Figurative painter Elmer Bischoff. Working in a thickly pigmented and textural style, the imagery in Brown’s work was often drawn from her personal life. Brown worked with multiple other artists to make popular the concepts of figurative painting, beat culture, and funk art.
